In 2018, I saw my nephew play lacrosse against Harvard in the Ivy League Championship game.
Chris played on the #1 Division1 lacrosse team in the country, Yale. He went # 23 in the Draft after his last season at Yale.
But that’s not the story.
I want you to know him, not because he’s an excellent lacrosse player, but because he's an exemplary model of what a great student-athlete should be. His youth story is one of the best I’ve ever heard. It will convince you that no one can hold you back...ever.
I was very fortunate to be in the middle of the field shooting pix and videos during warm-ups, on the sideline with the team during the game, and in the locker room capturing their victory chant post-game.
There was something really special about that team. I could not figure out what it was while I was there. Later, I finally realized what made this team so special.
I saw something so rare that I wish all of our players could experience it.
It's this...
100% of the players bought in.
100% gave everything they had even if they were never going to see the field.
100% paid the price to be on this team and they were there to give everything they had to their teammates and coaches.
I absolutely love it when individual players figure this out (you have 100% control over this) and even more when teams figure this out (you have some influence on this).
When this Yale Lacrosse team took the field, it was as if the sky darkened over their opponents.
Coming out of the locker room, they formed two lines, ran at me, and split.
It’s hard to capture the emotion, but it made the White look like giants and the Red look, well, smaller.
It gave me goosebumps…
Watch the video below of the team both pre and post-game. See their faces and their actions. Then keep reading to see what you need to do to be where you want to be in your game and how you can help your soccer team even more than you are today.
Every single one of you has it in you to make the same decisions that these 40+ players made:
I am 100% committed to my development and my team, even with the imperfections of both.
I give everything I have in my training and team moments. These moments are precious and fleeting and I will not look back saying I shoulda, coulda, woulda… never.
No one can hold me back, but me.
