Grit and Making a US Youth National Team

Many want to achieve their personal best in soccer, play in college, or even play for their country. Few are gritty enough to stick with it to get to the top. The first time I saw Lily, it was easy to underestimate her because she has a trait that no one can see and measure. This invisible trait is Grit which can be defined as courage and resolve or strength of character. Players like Lily are why we began measuring Grit in our Captain Elite 10-Week soccer training courses. Gritty players often fool us all because those underestimated players will go the distance to meet their goals and become champions. Just like Lily.

From Lily

I started my first Captain Elite 10-week program about 21 months ago. The spring of that same year, I was not selected to make any of the club-wide teams at my club (NCFC). Also that same year, I was told I was cut from the ODP program completely. A great majority of the feedback I received was related to my clear discomfort on the ball.

When I started Captain Elite, I'm not going to lie, it was frustrating. Not being able to do certain movements as fast as I wanted was a challenge. However, as time progressed, I realized both the purpose behind having proper technique and the reason it was so heavily implemented into each 10-Week program.

The individual development aspect of competing with myself along with the competitive drive cultivated from competition against others within each program has undoubtedly contributed to making me the player I am today.

I am now on one of the highest club-wide teams at my club, a member of the South Region ODP pool, and a member of the US Youth National Futsal Team, and the help from Captain Elite and my coaches have contributed greatly to my success as a player. Lily Stegall
